38 Indian cities fall in moderate to high risk seismic zones


Top metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata fall underneath moderate to high risk seismic zones of the country, the National Disaster Management Authority has said.
“Earthquake may be a major issue of concern. Over 58.6 per cent of land in India is very susceptible to earthquakes and thirty eight cities fall underneath moderate to high risk seismic zones,” NDMA Vice Chairman Shashidhar Reddy told PTI.
Delhi, Chennai, Pune, bigger Mumbai, Kochi, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Ahmedabad, Dehradun are a number of the cities falling within the vulnerability zone.
Noting that an oversized variety of buildings made within the past haven't been created earthquake resistant, he said, “NDMA is guaranteeing that the new constructions that return up are disaster resistant and also the recent buildings are retrofitted.”
The NDMA is coaching an oversized variety of architects, engineers and masons to form certain that any new construction that comes up is earthquake resistant.
“To have a typography study, a team of consultants from six IITs led by IIT-Mumbai is functioning along to classify buildings in ten differing types, to form all buildings earthquake resistant,” he said.
A senior NDMA official said that 235 districts fall within the seismic zones IV and V.
“We have to be compelled to take into thought structural safety, mitigation and preparedness and immediate response. Lifeline buildings and phone booths have to be compelled to be retrofitted and demanding installations in zone IV areas mustn't be allowed,” the official said.
He said in spite of Japan being highly equipped and totally ready, when disaster struck, the country was devastated.
“It reminds us of our vulnerability. Disaster management isn't a one-day job. We’ve got already done mistakes in not closely monitoring our constructions within the past.”
Since creating all buildings earthquake resistant may be a state subject, NDMA has already written to most the states to make sure safe construction as per disaster management tips.
However, a senior official rued “No substantial response has been received thus far.”
